Critical cluster size: Island morphology and size distribution in submonolayer epitaxial growth.

چکیده
The dynamic scaling of the island-size distribution in submonolayer epitaxial growth and its dependence on the critical island size i is studied using a realistic model of epitaxial growth for i 0, 1, 2, and 3. An analytic expression for the scaled island-size distribution as a function of i is also proposed. Our results agree well with experiments on FeyFe(100) deposition and on FeyCu(100) deposition. Crossover scaling forms for the variation of the island density and critical island size as a function of temperature and deposition rate are also presented.

Kinetics of Submonolayer Epitaxial Growth
Molecular beam epitaxy is an important method for growing thinlms and nanostructures. One of the scienti c challenges is to understand the fundamental processes that control the evolution of thin lm structure and morphology. The results of kinetic Monte Carlo simulations carried out to study the dependence of the submonolayer scaled island-size distribution on the critical island-size are prese...
متن کاملRapid Note Logarithmic islanding in submonolayer epitaxial growth
We investigate submonolayer epitaxial growth with a fixed monomer flux and irreversible aggregation of adatom islands due to an effective island diffusion, with a diffusivity for an mass k island proportional to k. For 0 ≤ μ < 1, there is a steady state, while for μ ≥ 1, continuously evolving logarithmic islanding occurs in which the island density grows extremely slowly, as (ln t). In the latt...
متن کاملRate-equation approach to island capture zones and size distributions in epitaxial growth.
Understanding and predicting the effects of correlations between island size and the rate of monomer capture has been shown to be the central problem in predicting the island-size distribution in submonolayer growth. Here we summarize a method which involves a self-consistent coupling of evolution equations for the capture-zone distributions with rate equations for the island-size distribution....
متن کاملInfluence of island diffusion on submonolayer epitaxial growth
We investigate the kinetics of submonolayer epitaxial growth which is driven by a fixed flux of monomers onto a substrate. Adatoms diffuse on the surface, leading to irreversible aggregation of islands. We also account for the effective diffusion of islands, which originates from hopping processes of their constituent adatoms, on the kinetics. When the diffusivity of an island of mass k scales ...
متن کاملLevel set approach to reversible epitaxial growth.
We generalize the level set approach to model epitaxial growth to include thermal detachment of atoms from island edges. This means that islands do not always grow and island dissociation can occur. We make no assumptions about a critical nucleus. Excellent quantitative agreement is obtained with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations for island densities and island size distributions in the submonola...
